The Connecting Classrooms team – the JRC is part of the CC initiative

The FTM2V is the Youth Newsgathering and Reporters Club here in the Velondriake region and surrounding areas. The FTM2V works in partnership with Blue Ventures and the local community, and conducts interviews with them to gather news. The FTM2V uses film for its interviews and newsgathering on important issues in Velondriake, in particular about the environment and different sorts of community sensibilisations. The members of the FTM2V also do their own audio and video editing (montage), and contribute to the Feom’Bezo radio show twice monthly. They also benefit from a weekly computer skills course, where they also learn the editing process. The BV Education team conducts monthly evaluations of FTM2V progress.
Before, the name of the FTM2V club was JRC, or Junior Reporters Club. However the members decided to give their club a name in Malagasy, because JRC is in a foreign language and hard for people in this region to understand. This is why the JRC is now referred to as FTM2V, which is now easier to explain to friends and community members.

The FTM2V has already finished a number of films: films on environmental education, the Velondriake Dina, the BV Aquaculture project (sea cucumber and seaweed farming), a film about the Community-Lead Total Sanitation project, the LMMA forum (for Locally-Managed Marine Areas), films for the Village Outreach Tour on the importance of the coral reefs, fish, seagrass, and the octopus reserves; a film about the new Teariake LMMA and the “It’s Time!” campaign, a film about the endangered spider tortoise, a number of filmed interviews with BV scholars, a film about the Connecting Classrooms trip to the baobab forest, a film about the Manjaboake LMMA, a music video of the “Respect the Environment” song by the local youth music group Arpavalerio, and music videos for educational songs by the local musician Sylvere.
In the future, the FTM2V will continue to improve its efforts and skills. The members will work to create radio programs, fictional educational stories, and more films to continue to educate the community on conservation issues.
